Ladies and gentleman:
I am very pleased to serve as your tour guide. Today we are going to visit the ancient town of Lijiang------before we get there, I?d like to give you a brief introduction to it.
Located in northwest of YN province, Lijiang is about 580 kilometers away from KM with an average elevation of 2400 meters. The population of Lijiang is about 1.12 million. Among which the population of Naxi the main nationality here, is 260000.so how about the surroundings of Lijiang.
Located in the north of Lijiang town, the Yulong snow mountains is the
southernmost modern marine glaciers in the temperate zone of the north hemisphere. the other famous scenic spots around Lijiang are--- the Laojunshan mountain, Lugu lake and the Tiger Leaping Gorge which are also very famous and attracted many tourists. The famous characteristics of Naxi culture are the 3 living fossils, they are----the character fossil. Created in Tang Dynasty, the Dongba character was regarded as the only existing hieroglyph; and the music fossil, the Naxi ancient music, later we will fully appreciate the beauty and mystery of the music, I will give you more details; and the third fossil is the human society fossil, the Mosuo matriarchal family. Most Mosuo people living near the Lugu lake still practice their ?walking marriage? custom. At night the man comes to the woman?s house and return to his house in the morning, so they live separately. Women manage the households and yield works, play a more important role than men in family life.
Now we have come to the ancient town of Lijiang, which enjoys the fame ?eastern Venice?. And it has another name-Dayan town, which literally means –a great ink slab, with Lion Mountain in the west and Elephant Mountain in the north, the ancient town is surrounded by green hills, so it looks like a jade ink slab. The town was first built in song dynasty and has a long history of 800 years. In 1997 it was listed in the world culture heritage.
Now we are arriving at the entrance to the town, as you can see, there is a big carved wall in front of us, from the figures on the surface of the wall, you can see a character who has similar image to a monk, but in Naxi culture he is a Dongba whose function is like a priest in Christianity, he plays a very important role in Naxi people?s life. Especially for faith.
Going ahead we will see a white screen with an inscription by former leader Jiang zeming on May 2 1997 meaning –the world?s cultural heritage: the ancient town of the Lijiang.
Now you can see the old town has no walls, it was said that the hereditary ruler of Lijiang used to be surnamed Mu but If this character Mu was surrounded with a frame or a wall, it would become an another Chinese character ---Kun, which means siege or predicament. So there is no stone wall surrounded, very different from other old town in china right?
Ok let?s pay attention to the two waterwheels, which are said to be lover waterwheels or mother and son waterwheels, but no matter what they stand for, they have the same meaning---they will nestle to each other for ever.
Follow me, Let?s walk up to the Yulong bridge, the spring from the Yulong snow mountain is pided into 3 branches and sub-branches to flow into the old town. So let me give you a tip, because there are so many streets and lanes in the town, it is like a maze. if you are lost , you can easily find the entrance to the ancient town by walking up any of the streams.
So everyone is here? Let?s go into the old town. The road under our feet is parallel to the streams which can wash the road when blocked up, so the streets are neither muddy in the rainy season nor dusty in the dry season. The town depends on water for existence, so there are so many streams that more than 350 wooden or stone bridges in the town were built. And the most famous bridges are the Baisui Bridge and Dashi Bridge which also called Men Bridge.
Through the Dashi Bridge, now we have come to the Sifang Street, which means Square Street. Because it looks like a Chinese seal meaning ruling everywhere, it is the center of the ancient town. The square street is surrounded by five main streets; they are Xinhua Wuyi Qiyi Guangyi Xinyi leading in all directions.
In ancient times ,it had been an important marketing center on the ancient Tea-Horse Road. The trade history was more than 300 years. But now many handicraft shops, tea houses and restaurants make it a sea of the visitors. In every Saturdays evening. The Naxi people usually gather and dance here, unfortunately today is Monday we can?t catch that fantastic night. And around the square there are many protected Naxi traditional building, the typical styles are “three houses and one screen wall” and “four houses and five courtyards. This building is called Kegong Archway, it was built 100 years ago to honor the 3 brothers passed the provincial official enrolling exams. The original building was 2 storied, but it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt as 3-story on the former site
Now the Naxi boys and girls are coming, you can see the Naxi men have the same clothes as Han people, on the contrary, most Naxi women wear blue blouses and trousers, covered by blue or black aprons. The T-shaped traditional ape On the back symbolizes the heavens, the seven embroidered circles symbolize the Dipper. 2 larger circles, one on each shoulder, symbolize sun and moon, which mean they work day and night, so it is very lucky to marry a Naxi woman, (bachelors should not miss this opportunity.)
Now we are enjoying the Naxi ancient music, it was praised by the contemporary as the “living fossil of music “it is composed of “Baisha Fine music” “dongjing music” and ”huangjing music” and all the performers are Naxi minority. There are usually 24 players in the group, some of them are aged. They use the original instruments, which are not seen in other parts of the world. There are more than 5 theaters for this Chinese classic music. But all of them are quite atmospheric, with wooden stages for the musicians and wood chairs and benches for the audiences, sitting here, listening to the Naxi music; you will be lost in this china?s Shangri-la.
Now our visit to Lijiang is drawing to a close, I am afraid everyone must be hungry. Now we will go back to the hotel and have supper. At night we will join the campfire with Naxi people. Let?s go!!!!

The ShaoLin Temple The shaolin temple was first completed in 495, during the reign of Northern Wei Dynasty. In 527, Bodhidharma, the disciple of Sakyamuni of the 28th generation came here to practice Zen creed. As it was concealed in the thick woods of the shaoshi hill, it was given the name Shaolin Temple meaning “temple in the woods of Shaoshi Hill”. As you know, the shaolin temple is widely known not only for its ancient and mysterious Buddhist culture, but also for its martial arts, that is Kungfu in Chinese, which enjoys a tradition of some 20__ years. So that’s the saying “Chinese Kungfu taking the first place under the heaven” and “the best kungfu originating from shaolin temple.” In the year 20__, the temple sightseeing zone was designated to be one of the AAAAA—grade tourist attractions of China by the National Tourism Administration
Now we’re standing in front of the Front Gate Hall. Please look up at the plaque hanging above the lintel, and you’ll find the plaque bears three Chinese characters, Shaolin Si, the name of the temple. This is said to be handwritten by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. This work is very precious because the emperor r wrote. Ok please follow me. Just now, we have visited the Front Gate Hall, steles, ginkgos, and the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, and now, we are just in the principal hall in the temple, the Hall of Mahavira. This hall is enshrined with three main Buddhas in the central part. They are Sakyamuni Buddha sitting in the middle and Pharmacist Buddha of the Eastern Glazed World and Amitabha Buddha from the Western Paradise sitting on both sides. Along the gable walls, sit 18 Buddhist Arhats, who were enlightened Buddhist monks. On both sides in front of the Hall of Mahavira, stand the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower symmetrically. They were rebuilt in 1994 used to report hours for the temple. Normally the bell is used in the morning, while the drum, in the afternoon, hence the saying “morning bell and afternoon drum”.
In front of the Bell Tower is the stele called “the Stele of Li Shimin” telling the story about how the monks from the Shaolin Temple rescued Prince Li Shimin from being pursued and attacked by Wang Shichong during the late Sui Dynasty. Li Shimin, who later became the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty wrote the inscriptions on the stele personally, and left with a signature of Shi min on the stele. Ok please come with me, we are going to the next hall. So now, the pavilion in front of us, not like the Zangjingge and the Abbot’s rooms we visited just now, enjoys a moving story. It’s named Dharma’s Pavilion or Lixue Pavilion, that is “Standing in the snow” in English. It says: After Boddhi Dharma came to China, many Chinese Buddhist believers wanted to be his followers, and Shengguang was the most prominent of all of them. Healways followed him whenever and wherever he went and served Dharma with heart and soul. But Dharma didn’t agree to accept Shengguang as a disciple. Shengguang didn’t lose heart and became even more steadfast. On a snowy night, he begged as usual with Budhidharma outside, standing in the knee—high snow. The master set forward a prerequisite: he would not meet his demand unless it would snow in red flakes. Suddenly Shengguang drew out the sword and cut off his left arm and stained the snowy ground. Bodhidharma was so moved that he passed his mantle, alms bowl and musical instruments on to Shengguang and gave him a Buddhist name of Huike. He was regarded as the second founder of the Zen sect. Emperor Qianlong wrote a phrase on a plaque in commemoration Alright everyone, now we are in the last hall, Pilu Hall, also called a Thousand Buddha Hall. It’s also the largest structure of the Shaolin Temple. This is just the highlight of the sightseeing zone. So until now, the visit in the Shaolin Temple is almost over. I think you may have some questions about the temple, or you want to take some photos. So, please do remember, you have half an hour. After half an hour we will gather in our bus, and make sure you’ll be there on time. And then we are going to the Pagoda Forest. Thank you for your attention!
The longmen grottoes Around 13 km south of Luoyang, there are two picturesque hills confronting each other with the Yi River flowing northward between them, connected by an arched stone bridge resembling a natural gate tower. This is the right place named Longmen, where the well—known Longmen Grottoes is located. The grottoes, which earns the fame of one of the Three Treasure Houses of Stone Sculpture in China, was created over 1500 years age. It was first known in the year 493 AD, when Emperor Xiaowen moved his capital to Luoyang from Datong, Shannxi Province, which marked the initiation of development and expanse of Buddhism in Central China. It prolongs for 1000 meters from north to south. According to the statistics conducted in recent years, there are 2300 caves and niches with over 100000 Buddhist figures. In addition, more than 2800 tablet inscriptions and some 40 Buddhist pagodas were preserved in or out of the caves.
Now, we’ve got to the grottoes. In front of you, here is the Qianxi Temple. It was built in the early Tang Dynasty around 640 AD. It has altogether 7 Buddhist statues inside, of which, AmitabhaBuddha is sitting in the central part with 2 of his favorite disciples, 2 Bodhisattvas, and 2 Heavenly Kings. Please come with me. Now we are in front of the Bin yang Caves. The Bin yang Caves consist of 3 large caves, the North, the Middle and the South caves. The Mid and the South caves were built under Emperor Xuanwu for practicing the merits and virtues for his diseased parents, late Emperor Xiaowen and late Empress DowagerWenzhao. While the North Bin yang cave was added for the late Emperor Xuanwu by a eunuch in the palace. In the Western Hill of Longmen, there are several “the most” caves to feast your eyes. Just now, we visited the Ten—thousand Buddha Cave with 15000 Buddhist images, which has the most Buddha images, and the Lotus Cave with 2cm—high Buddha images, which are the tiniest Buddha images. And now, we’ve come to another “most”, the Fengxian Temple. Fengxian Temple was built in the Tang Dynasty and it is the largest grotto in Longmen Temple with a width of 36 meters and a length of 41 meters. The most impressive figure is the statue of Vairocana Buddha sitting cross—legged on the eight—square lotus throne. It is 17.14 meters in total height with the head 4meters in height and the ears 1.9 meters in length. At the sides of Vairocana there are two statues of Vairocana Buddhas disciples, Kasyapa and Ananda, wearing prudent and devout expressions, next are 2 Bodhisattvas, Heavenly Kings, andGreat Men of Strength. Vairocana means illuminating all things in the sutra. The Buddha has a well—filled figure, a sacred and kindly expression and an elegant smile. The chief Buddha gives you an impression of dignified manner, magnificent looking, wise, farsighted and kind nature. The various appearances and delicate designs are the representations of Empire Tangs powerful material and spiritual strength as well as the high crystallization of peoples wisdoms. Looking around the overall arrangement, we would rather say that the Fengxian Temple is a scene of a grand imperial court than a spot of Buddhism. Generally speaking, the Fengxian Temple is the most magnificent and artistic among all the shrines of the Tang Dynasty as well as an example of success in integrating politics with Buddhism in ancient China. Ok everyone, now you can take photos here. Or you can ask questions that you don’t understand. After 15 minutes we will gather right here. See you then.
Yuntai Mountain Situated in Xiuwu county, Hennan province, Yuntai Mountain has edged onto the China National Natural Heritage Candidate List due to its unique geological landforms, rich natural resources and cultural relics. It is characterized by its structural cuesta, flying waterfalls on faulted cliffs, quiet valleys and clear springs.Known as a world geopark, it was one of the first world geoparks to be approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 20__. The park is known for its massive gardening areas, overhanging high cliffs, flying waterfalls, secluded valleys and spring water, with a spring in every 3 steps, a waterfall in every 5 steps, a pond in every 10 steps .Covering an area of 190sqm, the scenic spot is composed of many sightseeing places, such as Tan pu Gorge, Quanpu Gorge, Red Stone Gorge, Zifang Lake, Macaque Valley etc.
The Red Stone Canyon, which is a rare canyon sight in north China with waterfalls, lakes, pools and gullies, is highly acclaimed by gardening experts as a “natural gallery for mountain and river collections” because of its grand and exclusive landscapes. The most splendid waterfall in the canyon is the Bailong Waterfall, divided into three falls, measuring 30 meters in height. It looks as shiny as a huge silver dragon. A good place for waterfall watching is the Heilong (Black Dragon) Cave, which is as long as 30 meters with absolute darkness inside. Standing in the cave, you can not only see the marvelous falls dashing down into the deep pools but also the perilous high stiffs, narrowly separated from each other by fast—flowing gullies so that the sky is scarcely visible. The spring water flowing down the cliffs splashes into water drops that dazzle in the sunlight like colorful diamonds, looking like a unique picture hanging on the wall. Yuntai Mountain is famous for its grotesque hill, which extends as far as eyes can see. The main peak, Cornel Peak, is 1308m above the sea level. It is said to be famous for a poem by a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty called Wang Wei, who worked out a popular poem when he climbed up the mountain. The poem Thinking of My Brothers in Mountain Climbing Day fully conveys his emotion of missing friends. Mounting to the mountain top and looking far into the distance, you can see the Yellow River winding like a silver belt. Having a bird view of the foot of the mountain, you can see chains of peaks like sea waves. The weather on the top is oftenhttp: unpredictable. All at once clouds gather and wind blows, with mist rising among the mountains. The mountains looming in the mist and clouds look so vague that you feel as if you were in a fairy world.
Also, It had been the secluded place of seven Bamboo Forest Sages of the Wei and the Jin Period. Medicine King, Sun Simiao, once collected Chinese medicine here. Many historical stories are spreading in the area related to some fames once visited here. Yuntai Mountain is famous for its numerous rivers, lakes, pools and springs. Here we can see the highest waterfall in the country———— Yuntai Skyscraper Waterfall, which is 314 meters high like a huge pillar, reminds us of a famous peom of Libai“ The waters puring down from thousands above of the mountain, like the silver river dropping down from top of the heaven”. It looks especially magnificent, forming a unique spectacle along with other waterfalls, such as the Tianmen Waterfall, Bailong Waterfall, Huanglong Waterfall and Y—shaped Waterfall, dashing abruptly downward. Well, next spot for us is the Qinglong Canyon here, renowned as “First Canyon in Central China”, attracts many people for ecological touring for its mild climate, rich water resources and various vegetations.
The Garden of Market in Qingming Festival Now we’re leading our way to the city of Kaifeng. Kaifengis one of the 8 major ancient capitals of China. The city of Kaifeng was already in existence before 700 B.C. During the period of Warring States more than 2,000 years ago, King Hui of the State of Wei moved his capital to Kaifeng, rebuilt the city and called it Daliang. Since then, Kaifeng was the capital of several dynasties. As an ancient capital, Kaifeng has a lot of historical relics and scenic spots. Some of them have been preserved, such as the iron Pagoda, Po Pagoda, Xiangguo Monastery, Dragon Pavilion. They are precious heritages of the Chinese culture. The famous painting Qingming Scroll is believed by some to portray daily life in Kaifeng. The painting, of which several versions are extant, is attributed to the Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan. Have you ever dreamed of going back to Northern Song Dynasty in China and enjoy the prosperity and culture of those years? If so, come to the Garden of Market in Qingming Festivallocated in the old city of Kaifeng in Henan Province. Find yourself in the spectacular scenery there and you are sure to realize that dream. The Garden of Market in Qingming Festival located on the western bank of Longting Lake is a grand cultural garden. It covers an area of 600 mu, and the construction area is more than 30,000 square meters .The built area consists of several architectural complexes which are re—creations based on the famous twelfth century painting by Zhang Zeduan of The Qingming Festival by the Riverside.
When you enter the Garden of Market in Qingming Festival, a statue which is 16 meters tall comes into view. This figure is none other than the artist Zhang Zeduan, who holds his famous drawing of The Qingming Festival by the Riverside. This picture is a painted scroll which is 525 cm in length and 25.5 cm in width depicting life along Bian River during the Qingming Festival. The scenes in this painting are highly detailed and the spectacle is magnificent. There are large numbers of people and buildings. The people are shown in a variety of contemporary clothes that indicate their social standing and occupations. The lively throng includes many animals and it is not difficult to imagine the sounds in the street scenes where the people are crowded and noisy. We can almost hear someone’s bargaining with a shop owner while others are cheering entertainers. The picture is like a live symphony of life during the Song Dynasty.
Now we can find these scenic spots such as City Gate Tower, Rainbow Bridge, distinctive shops and others which are re—created in the Park according to the scenes in the painting. The Garden of Market in Qingming Festival not only reappears the vast vigor of the Millennium Picture, but also makes the history living by flexible creative idea, makes tourists the sense of backward flowing time by entering the park, just like passing through the space tunnel. Another scenic spot called Rainbow Bridge is a well—known feature in the Park. It is a replica of one of the ten ancient timber bridges. The bridge is 5 meters high. The first bridge was built in 1050, and reconstructed in 1998. Four 9 meters high columns, two at either end of the bridge, replicate the poles that were weather vanes at the time of the Song Dynasty. A white crane sits on a disk at the top of each column and they turn to face into the wind, indicating its direction. As a scenic spot for folk—custom tours, Chinese authorities have done a lot to preserve folk handcrafts and folk customs. You can see the process of making handicrafts, such as Bian embroidery, paintings for new years, enamel wares, tea ceremony, spinning and weaving, figures made from flour and sugar and folk—custom performances, such as acrobatics, folk arts and performances of birds, fighting cocks and dogs. Here, you are not only a visitor, but an actor. For example, you can act as Mr. Right in the competition for marrying Mr. Wang’s beautiful daughter and have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional wedding festivities. And you can be the No.1 Scholar in the imperial examination to bring honor to your ancestors. There is a large amusement hall built in the Song style, where many amusement activities are held, including swings, balance beams and many other amusements. As an ecological scenic spot, this garden was built and forested according to the Market Day During the QingMing Festival. The whole garden combines natural beauty with historical flavor, thus forming a favorable place to have a true rest and evoke your full energy both physically and spiritually.
Yin Ruins Yin Ruins is at Xiaotun Village of Anyang City. In ancient times, Xiaotun was called Yin and it was the capital of the Shang Dynasty. So the period was also called Yin Shang. After the Yin had been overthrown, the city declined and the remains of it was later called the Yin Ruins. Since the founding of new China, the Yin Ruins had been listed as the first group of cultural relics under national protection. In order to preserve its culture, the government built “Garden of the Yin Ruins” on the site. Today the garden is divided into several sections with ancient objects on display. Because of its great value in not only the historical relics of Chinese culture but also the human civilization of the whole world, Yin Xu topped the 100 Greatest Archeological Discoveries of China in the last century and it was listed in the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Yin Xu is revealing its beauty to the world.
OK, everybody. Soon we’ll get to the Museum on Yin Ruins, the best museum for the study of the Yin Shang Culture. The Yin Ruins is famous for three things,i.e.the oracle inscriptions, the bronze wares and the ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty. As you know, China is one of the earliest countries to discover characters. As early as 4,000 years ago, people used bones or tortoise shells to record events of their social life. It is the earliest written form of language in the world. Today we call them the oracle bone inscriptions, which were first discovered in the Yin Ruins. Well, let’s come to the main hall where the oracle inscriptions are exhibited. The oracle bone inscriptions were first discovered during the years of Emperor GuangXu, in the Qing Dynasty. In 1899, in Xiao Tun Village of Anyang City, Henan Province, villagers found many tortoise shells and bones carved with letters and symbols, which unveiled to the world from Yin Xu, an ancient city with a long history and splendid culture. Then more than 16,000 pieces of bones and shells were found. But in the Shang Dynasty, they were used as divinations, when people were very superstitious. The inscriptions cover a wide range of fields, such as sacrifice, wars, state affairs, weather, hunting, etc. Today, they provide important information for the study of the Shang Dynasty. And the study of the oracle bone inscriptions has become a new subject and is getting more popular among people. Since
then this place has become of great interest to worldwide archeologists, because those inscriptions have proved to be the earliest written characters of human beings, the Oracles. Apart from the oracle bone inscriptions, bronze wares are another important part of the cultural relics discovered from the Ruins, which show that the technology of bronze casting reached its peak in the Shang Dynasty. The bronze wares include vessels, weapons, chariots and so on. Among all the unearthed wares, SimuwuQuadripod unearthed in the mausoleum area of the Yin Ruins, the largest and the most famous bronze sacrificial vessel in the world, is 875 kg in weight, 133 cm in height. Standing on the open plaza in front of the great hall is an enlarged copy of the original one for the convenience of touring and appreciation, with the original one cherished in the Museum of Chinese History. With its unusual air of majesty, together with its elegance in appearance and intricately carved in patterns, it is considered a treasure in the bronze culture of China as well as a glorious pearl shining on the peak of the world art. To cast such a significant vessel carrying such a great weight, advanced techniques and experiences in organization of laborers are necessary. As many scholars have pointed out, this huge bronze quadripod reflects the advanced slavery system of the Shang Dynasty and the unusual power of creation of the people. Finally we come to the side of the imperial palaces and tombs. Lying on the southwest of the Foundation Ruins C, Fuhao Tomb is one of the most important archeology discoveries in the temple. It is also the only discovered and well—reserved tomb of Shang royal members since the science excavation of Yin Ruins. Now, let’s know something about the first woman general in Chinese history.FuHao was Emperor Wu Ding’s wife, both intelligent and courageous. She had bravely led the Yin army fighting in many wars and made great contributions to the protecting of the country. After her death, Wu Ding built a large tomb near the palace to honor her merits. Buried together with her were many slaves and war prisoners as well assacrificial objects. The large numbers of sacrificial objects are valuable cultural relics in the treasure house of Chinese art.

the Native Place of Emperor Huangdi
The Native Place of Emperor Huangdi is located in the north of Xinzheng City. As a scenic spot of 4A— class assessed by the National Tour Bureau, it is a holly land for Chinese people all over the world to worship their ancestors, with memorial temples, andmausoleums of Emperor Huangdi situated here. Every year on March 3 of the lunar calendar, the day when the first emperor in China established the first nation in Chinese history, people of Chinese origin from home and abroad gather in Xinzheng, the birthplace of XuanyuanHuangdi, or the Yellow Emperor, to offer sacrifices and worship this legendary ancestor of the Chinese nation. To respect this great Emperor, his descendants have held large ceremonies of worship, which have been attracting descendants of Yanhuang from America, Japan, Korea, Canada and other nations and areas each year. They come back to worship, seeking their roots here in China.
Now, Here we are, The Native Place of EmperorHuangdi. This square was built in the end of 1998.It covers an area of 15,000 square meters,of which 7,900 square meters are covered with trees and flowers. It has become a very important place for the domestic and overseas Chinese descendants to hold large—scaled activities to worship their ancestors. In the center of the square here is a three—legged tripod caldron, whichwas cast in the shape of bears, reminding of the Emperor Huangdi’s rising from the Youxiong Tribe. The three—sided body of the tripod caldron has the embossment of three dragons with a fireball, implying the glorious sun and praying for favorable weather for crops and a harvest. Standing at the center of the altar, it is laurelled as “the No.1 tripod caldron of the world” for its unparalleled size and its special origin. It is 6.99 meters in height, 24 tons in weight, which has been registered in the Guinness World Records. The height number of 6.99 made up of figure 6 and 9 implies the majesty of grandness in traditional Chinese culture. Through the Xuanyuan Bridge above the JishuiRiver , here we can see the main hall. Please look at the pair of the guarding animalssitting on both sides of the gate. They are stone bears. Do you know why chose bears to guard the gate? Because 5,000 years ago, there used to be many bears in Xinzheng. Bear was a kind of animal, very powerful and fierce then. In order to show people’s worship, the Youxiong Tribe regarded bear as the totem of their own tribe. Well, let’s enter the hall, there’re 8 mural paintings on the wall, which vividly depict the.
great achievements of the Yellow Emperor during his life. They’reThe Birth of the Yellow Emperor,Making Boat and Chariot,Setting up an alliance by EmperorHuangdi and Emperor Yandi, Crusading AgainstChiyou,Making Youxiong the Capital, Holding High the Dragon Flag, Developing Agriculture and Stock Raising, Creation of Chinese Civilization. It’s a long story behind these paintings: It is recorded that, in the Prehistoric Times, there lived many clans and tribes around the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, yet Huangdi was the most renowned tribal leader at that time. When the tribe lead by Yandi began to decline, Huangdis tribe was flourishing. During this period, Chiyou, another tribal leader, often lead his stronger tribe to invade other tribes, and invaded Yandis tribe. With the help of Huangdi, they defeated Chiyou. After 52 battlesHuangdi united China. All Chinese, despite nationalities, regardedHuangdi as our ancestor. Huangdi, the initiator of Chinese civilization, was hence worshipped by his descendants. After the capital was built,EmperorHuangdi raised his flag of dragon, symbolizing the unification of all tribes. The dragon was integrated with different parts of various animals: horse’s head, deer’s horn, tiger’s mouth, snake’s body, fish’s scales, and eagle’s claw. Since then, dragon has been the symbol of Chinese nation. On the both sides of the main hall, there’re eastern wing hall and western wing hall.In the east side hall, there is the statue of LuoZu, the first wife of EmperorHuangdi. She was the first person to raise silkworm and weave silk in ancient China and alsoan outstanding representative of ancient Chinese women. Every feudal dynasty set up temple for her and worshipped her as “the first ancestor in silkworm raising”. While in the west side hall, here is the statue Mother Mo, the fourth wife of Emperor Huangdi, who had invented the earliest “loom”for weaving. Later generations called her “mother Mo———the ancestor of weavers”.
Yamen in Neixiang County
The construction of the Yamen here started in 1303 in Yuan Dynasty, and the present buildings were built in Qing Dynasty. It was the most well preserved government office of country level in feudal China. Since our opening up to the outside world in 1984, it has attracted a number of our government officials and visitors form both at home and abroad because of its special history, science, attractive value and its own charm. We have the famous saying : Beijing is the dragonhead while the dragon’s tail is in Neixiang. It is also one of the important cultural relics of state level.
The front part building of the Yamen was called a screen wall, which was built with blue brick relief sculpture. In the middle of the screen, there is a strange beast, which is called “Tan”. It was said to be a greedy beast that could swallow gold and silver treasures in the legend. Here in the picture we can see that around it there are treasures everywhere. But he is not satisfied. His mouth opens widely intending to swallow the sun in the sky, but as a result, he falls off the steep cliff, having his body smashed into pieces. The picture on the screen was first created by Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty. The purpose of the drawing is to warn the government officials not to take bribes and break the law. Here is the main entrance, halfway there is another gate right in the middle, called Yimen, the second main official entrance. It used to be open only on the day when new governor took his place or when higher official came to visit. On both sides of the second gate, there’re two small doors, the one on the east was called Life door, while the one on the west was called Death door, or Ghost door, which was used only by the criminals when they were sentenced to death and were going to be killed. Passing through Yimen, you can see a grand building here in front of you . That is the great hall. The great hall was the place where the governor of the county announced the government orders, and also some important ceremonies were held here and some important and serious criminal cases were tried here. In the middle of it, a trial desk was placed, and on the desk, the four treasures of the study and the red and green bamboo pieces used for trial could be found. On the front side of the screen, there’s a picture of seawater, tide and the sun, meaning that an official should be as clear as the sun and the moon and as clean as seawater. In other words, an official should be honest and upright. When the prosecutor and the defendant were taken to the hall for trial, they must kneel down on the stones. The square stone on the east was for the prosecutor, and the rectangle stone on the west was for the accused. Since most cases.
involved more defendants, the stone for them was longer then. The house behind the great hall was called doorman house. The man who guarded the house was called Doorman, who was the county governor’s relative or people who were close to him. Now we have come to the second hall. It was the place where the County Magistrate dealt with small cases. Please look at these famous couplets, which means that before law everyone is equal. So the judges should pass the fairest judgment on people. This is called Fuzi Yard, an ancient form of address to a Confucian scholar or to a master by his disciples. Fuzi was usually the official’s assistant who was usually their close friend of knowledgeable and artistic talent. Everyone, including the county governor respectfully addressed him as Lao Fuzi, so the place where Fuzi worked was called Fuzi Yard. Finally, let’s go to the third hall. It was the place where county governor did his daily work. If the cases he dealt with were of great importance, he would do it here. There was also a garden behind. It was here that county governor enjoyed his free life and got away from his government affairs. As we can see now, there’re many succinct couplets with rich intension here. But this one before the third hall was the most famous. It was written by GaoYigong , a county governor in Neixiang county. It means that being the local officials, we rearded the common people as our parents. We worked for them voluntarily and willingly.Nowadays , many of our Party leaders like Chairman Jiang Zemin read it with deep feelings, and Premier Zhu Rongji sings high praise of it. The words can be no doubt regarded as famous saying and epigram, and the only one of its kind. So now the Ymen in Neixiang, together with the Museum Palace in Beijing, and the other two in Hebei and Shanxi, has formed a special international tore route of the four great ancient Chinese Yamens. Neixiang is now going out of Henan and into the world. We warmly welcome all the reiends from all over the world to visit Neixiang, and enjoy the elegant demeanor of the ancient Yamen.

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the former resident of Mao ZeDong”. Now, we are facing a simple and unsophisticated farmhouse .we call it Shangchangwu. And our great chairman Mao Zedong was born in this place on December 26th, 1893. Although it is a quite common farmhouse with U-shape construction in South China, it possesses beautiful views with limpid water and green mountains. Once, here lived two families, Mao’s family and their next door neighbor. And the thirteen and a half rooms on the left hand belong to Mao’s family.
Look up! There hangs a red tablet inscribed with golden characters “The former resident of Mao Zedong”. The inscription was written by Chairman Deng Xiaoping on April 2nd, 1983. Now, let’s enter into the central room. It’s a place for Mao’s family and their neighbors enjoying together to entertain guests. The old fashioned table and chairs here are settled as they were many years ago. Please look at this! It is called Shenkan, which is a family area of worship of God and ancestors. When chairman Mao as a child, he often helped his parents doing some housework in this place. And the big buckets here are the original items in those years.
Here we come to the kitchen. Please look at that cooking range. It is made from mud bricks according to the memory of the old people when recovering the exhibition. There is a big Brazier put in the middle of the room. The southern peasant families usually have a room to keep warm by firing wood in winter. And there is an iron hook hung above it. It is called “Lutanggou” and it was used to boll water and rice. It is really a lively atmosphere when the whole family gets together and sits around the brazier to warm themselves and chat together. In the spring of 1921. It’s around this brazier that Mao Zedong persuaded his relatives to join the revolution. After hearing his brother Mao Zenmin’s suffering in that troubled times, Mao Zedong said that: “yes, it is not happen on only us, but all of us in the whole country! We can’t live without fighting against the evil. So we should do some benefit things for our society in spite of the safety of ourselves.” Afterwards, by the guiding of Mao Zedong, all his families devoted themselves to the revolutionary career. And there are 6 families sacrificed in the war.
Now we come into the bedroom of Mao’s parents and Mao was born just in this room on December 26th, 1893. There are portraits of Mao’s parents on the wall. His father—Mao Shunsheng was born in October, 1870 and was a very simple and diligent farmer. But unfortunately he died from acute febrile in his fifty in 1920.we should say that it is the father’s industry and good housekeeping management that supported Mao Zedong out learning in his early years. This lady was Mao’s mother—Wenshi. She was born in1867 and was not only diligent but also intelligent. This farm woman was so warm-hearted that she was always helping other neighbors. The good moral character of the parents gave a deep impression upon the great man. When Mao Zedong watched the portrait of his mother in 1959, he signed: “I’m really looks like my mother.” And yes, this old wooden bed in front of us is also an original one. .
This is Mao’s bedroom. The portrait on the wall was the group photo of Mao’s mother, Mao’s two brothers and himself in spring 1919 in Changsha. That year, Mao worked in Changsha and his little brother also studied in the city. Because his elder brother sent their badly sick mother to see a doctor in the provincial capital, the families had the chance to leave the memory. Also in this year’s October, his mother died. And the cherish photo was carefully collected by Mao’s mother’s family. The bedroom is also the study of Mao Zedong. Look, this is the oil lamp accompanied by Mao reading in his childhood. In summer nights, there were many mosquitoes. So he put up a mosquito net and only left his head outside to read. And in winter, he often stayed up to read books with this oil lamp. Even when he dropped out of school in his 13 to 15, he still read as many books as he could get Your attention, please! Otherwise you’ll miss an attic in this room. And it is in this room that the ShaoShan Branch of the Chinese Communist Party was set up. Ok, follow me please. Here is the site where MaoZedong placed his farm tools. He began his work at the age of six. From the age 13 to 15, because of lack of physical labor, he dropped out of school to work on the farm. Therefore, he was a professional farmer for two years. The water wheels and graphite here are stuff used by MaoZedong. Ok, so much for today. Hopefully, you shall have pleasant and unforgettable memories of the resident.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen:
I am very glad to serve as your guide today. You can call me Lily. Pleasekeep my name card at hand. f you have any trouble or lose your way, just callme. My number is here. I’ll do my best to serve for you.
Now we are in front of the Prince Gong’s Mansion. It was the residence ofHe Shen. He was the Prime Ministery and the Minister of Defence in the years ofQanlong, the most prosperous stage of Qing Dynasty. In1850s, the mansion wasbestowed on Prince Gong. Compared with the Forbidden City, it seems to be alittle less famous. Why we come here ? The answer is its first owner, He Shen,is a very famous person in Chinese history. Every Chinese knows him no matterthe kids or the old. There are even many novels, poems, movies and TV seriestelling his story. Why is he so well-known? Because he was the corruptestofficial in Chinese history. You can’t imagine how large amount of his graft is.The successive Emperor Jiaqing sentenced He′to death and took possession of histreasure. The money he left behind amounted to 4,000 tons of silver, equalingten years’ income of the national treasury. If you change it into US dollars, itis 520 billion! I wonder how he got so large amount of money in only one life.Certainly, he paid lots of manpowers and materials to build his own mansion. Itis the largest and the best preserved Prince Mansion in Beijing. As you see, thePalace Museum is grand, national and formal. I think this one is more personal. You can see another style of Chinese building . Now, let’s begin our wonderfulvisit. Follow me, please!
The gate you see is called Western Gate. Are you familiar with it? Yes, thearchitect learned something from Europe. Nowadays, it is very common to seethere are different kinds of styles coming from different countries in a garden. But in Qing Dynasty, the emperor didn’t want any communication with othercountries. So this kind of gate was really rare, at that time. There were onlythree Western Gates all over the country. One was this. The other two were bothin imperial garden.
Let’s enter the garden.. Can you smell the fresh air and sweet fragrance? It’s really comfortable. Pay attention to the thin stone, please. It is notartificial but natural. ts name is Joy Peak. In China, it’s tradition to put ahuge stone or screen in front of the gate. It can protect the good luck andwealth from flowing away and ward off evil spirits. It is still true today.Besides, because of its existence you can’t see the inner scene directly. You’llbe curious and have a strong desire to go in. But, this one has another specialfunction. Look at it using you imagination. What does it look like? (Here andhere)Yes ! It looks like a holy mother hugging her son. Even though He′had manywives, he still didn’t have a son in his middle age. He was so worried aboutthis until he found this stone. He expected it would bring him a son. It iswonderful that He′got the only son in his life the next year. What a happycoincidence!
After going around the stone, the Bat Pond comes into our view. It getsthis name because its shape was like a bat. Why he like such an animal? Evenmyself as a Chinese can’t understand this at first. IN most people’s mind, thisanimal represents something evil. Now I get the answer. In Chinese, thepronunciation of bat is…and the pronunciation of happiness is…They are the same! There are 9999 bats in the garden. This is one of the specialties of PrinceGong’s Mansion. Of course, they are not real, hey are pictures or symbols. Haveyou noticed the four elm trees around the pond? Do you feel them a littlestrange? Look! They all grow to the heart of the pond, Their branches are abovethe pond. As a result, when autumn comes, the fruit and leaves of them will dropinto the pond.
Are you confused? Why he built this? Of course, it has a further meaning. The shape of elm’s fruit and leaves is very similar with Chinese bronze coin. He′hinted his ambition to gather all the wealth in his own wallet. At last heactually got it. In addition, all the water in the mansion is circulating. Itwill keep fresh and clear all the year round. If you are careful enough, you mayfind that there are few rivers in Beijing. In ancient time, if you wanted ariver flow over your garden, you must get the emperor’s permission. So it is afairly great honor to have this. You can see how much the emperor appreciateHe′! You can go around to take photos here. It will bring you good luck andwealth because of the pong and the artificial hill. There is a great secretunder the hill. I will tell it to you after a while. Now, if you have anyquestion, ask me please! We will climb the hill after a quarter. Is that OK?

According to ancient Chinese mythology, the dragon hadnine sons, but none of them became a real dragon. Suanni was one of the ninesons of the dragon. It was an auspicious animal that could avoid evil spirits inancient lengeds. Suanni has the head of dragon, the antlers of dear, the hoovesof ox and the tail of lion.
(In front of the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity)
This grand hall is the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity. It was firstbuilt in 1750. The name of this hall taken from a book entitled ‘Lun Yu’ byConfucius doctrine means, “ those who are benevolent can enjoy a long life.”This hall was the place where Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi heldaudience and handled state affairs when they were in the Summer Palace. Forprotecting the historical cultural relic, we couldn’t enter the hall. So I wouldlike to briefly introduce you the decorations in the Hall of Benevolence andLongevity. The arrangement of the hall has been left untouched. In the middle ofthe hall stands an emperor’s throne carved with nine dragons on design. Thereare two big fans on both sides behind the throne which are made of peacockfeathers. Behind the throne there is a big screen with red sandalwood frame andglass mirror inlaid. On the mirror there are 226 Chinese characters of the word‘Longevity’ written in different styles. There are two scrolls on each side ofthe wall with a big Chinese character ‘Longevity’ written on it. It was saidthat the word ‘Longevity’ written by Empress Dowager Cixi. There are 100 batspainted at the background of the scroll symbolizing happiness.
Well, please look up the two pairs of incense burners in the shape of adragon and a phoenix in front of the hall. They were used to burn incense sticksto create the appropriate atmosphere. In the old days, the dragon and phoenixwere the symbol of the emperor and empress. According to ritual, the dragonsshould be placed in the center while phoenixes were to either side in front ofthe hall. However, here, the dragons are off to the sides and the phoenixes arein the middle. This was a product of the end of Qing Dynasty when EmpressDowager Cixi handled state affairs behind the screen.
(At the entrance of Garden of virtuour Harmony)
We are now visiting the Garden of Virtuous Harmony, where Emperor Qianlongand Empress Dowager Cixi were entertained with Bejing Opera performances. Itmainly consists of the Dressing House, the Grand Theater Building and the Hallof Pleasure Smile. The Grand Theater Building was known as the ‘Cradle ofBeijing Opera’ was uniquely laid out and magnificently decorated. There are 7exhibition halls with articles of daily use on display here.
(In front of the Grand Theater Building)
This is the Grand Theater Building. Of the three main theater buildings ofthe Qing Dynasty, the Grand Theater Building is the tallest and largest one. Theother two are Changyin Pavilion in the Forbidden City and Qingyin Pavilion inthe Mountain Resort in Chengde. The Grand Theater Building, a three-storiedstructure, has a double roof with upturned eaves. It is 21 meters high and 17meters wide. Performances could be staged simultaneously on three levels. Thetop one was a symbol of happiness, the middle level was emolument level and thebottom stage was named longevity stage. Each level has the entrance and theexit. There are some trapdoors in the ceiling and below the floor for ‘celestialbeing’ to fly down from the sky and the ‘devils’ to appear from the earth to setoff a certain atmosphere on the stage. There is also a well and five ponds builtunder the stage for a good effect of water scenes. The stage is open to threesides.
Well, please look at the construction that stands right opposite the GrandTheater Building, it’s the Hall of Pleasure Smile. The Empress Dowager Cixi usedbo sit inside the hall to watch and enjoy the Peking Opera.
(A lakeside walk from the Garden of virtuous Harmony to the Hall of JadeRipples)
We are now standing in the middle of a rockery behind the Hall ofBenevolence and Longevity. It appears that there’s nothing special ahead. However, after we clear the rockery, we will reach Kunming Lake. This is anapplication of a specific style of Chinese
gardening.
Now, we are walking along the bank of the Kunming Lake. Look over there, not far away in the lake there is an islet. It’s called the Spring HeraldingIslet. The pavilion on the islet is called the Spring Heralding Pavilion. Anumber of willow trees and peach trees were planted on this islet. In earlyspring, when the ice begins to melt, peach trees are red in pink blossoms, willow trees turn a tender green signaling that the early spring has returned.Hence the name ‘Heralding Sping Pavilion’.
(In front of the Hall of Jade Ripples)
This group of special and quiet courtyard dwellings is the Hall of JadeRipples. The words “Jade Ripples” came from a verse “Gentle ripples gushing outof Jade Spring”, which refers to the rippling water in the lake. It was firstused by Emperor Qianlong to attend to state affairs. In the late Qing Dynasty,it was where Emperor Guangxu was put under house arrest.
This hall is a hallmark of the Movement of 1898. Emperor Guangxu wasEmperor Dowager Cixi’s nephew. After Emperor Tongzhi died, Emperor Dowager Ciximade her nephew, who was at that time four years old a successor in order tocontinue her hold on imperial power. She ‘handled state affairs behind thescreen’. After Emperor Guangxu ‘managed state affairs personally’ at the age of19, a political conflict occurred between the conservatives and the reformers. In 1898, the Reform Movement took place with the aim of sustaining the coreprinciples of the Qing Dynasty while reforming outdated laws. The movementlasted for103 days until it was suppressed by Empress Dowager Cixi. It wascalled the ‘Hundred-Day Reform’. After the reform failed, Emperor Guangxu wasput under house arrest here. For the strict control of him, Empress Dowager Cixiordered to build many brick walls in the front, back, and on the right and leftof the Hall of Jade Ripples. At that time the hall was entirely sealed up, justlike a prison. Today only the hidden walls in the east and west annex room stillmaintain its original appearance. It is open to visitors as the relic related tothe 1898 Reform Movement.
(In front of the Chamber of Collecting Books)
This is the Chamber of Collecting Books. In Chinese, it’s called “Yi YunGuang”. “Yun” was a kind of fragrant weed. In ancient times, it was usually usedas termite repellent in rooms where books were stored. In the Emperor Qianlong’sreign, the purpose of the hall was for collecting books. Later it was convertedinto a residence. There used to be the residence of Guangxu’s Empress Longyu, and his favorite concubine Zhenfei.
(In the Hall of Happiness and Longevity)
This group of courtyard is the Hall of Happiness and Longevity. It was themajor architectural structure in the living quarters and the residence ofEmpress Dowager Cixi. The whole compound was basically made of wood, which isideal for ventilation and lighting. With its quiet and tasteful layout, the Hallof Happiness and Longevity made life very easy and convenient. In front of theHall of Happiness and Longevity there is a huge rock placed in the middle ofthis courtyard named “Qing Zhi Xiu” and nicknamed as “Family Bankruptcy Rock”.This huge rock was discovered in Fangshan District by a Ming official MiWanzhong. He wanted to transport it to his own garden “Shaoyuan”. In the olddays, transporting such rock was very difficult. After spending all his money toship it, he still could not succeed in doing this. The big rock was then left onthe roadside somewhere near Liangxiang County, 30 kilometers southwest ofBeijing. Hence it was nicknamed “Family Bancruptcy Rock”. Later Emperor Qianlongdiscovered it and transported to the Garden of Clear Ripples and laid in frontof the Hall of Happiness and Longevity. The colorful glass chandeliers hanginginside the hall was introduced from Germany in 1903. It is one of the earliestelectric lights in China.
(In front of the Gate of Inviting the Moon of the Long Corridor)
Ladies and Gentlemen, you may have visited some of the best museums in theworld, such as the Louvre in France and the Museum of Great Britain. Now I willshow you a special gallery in the palace—the Long Corridor. In 1990, the LongCorridor was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as ‘the longestpainted corridor’ in the world’. It would be a pity if we leave the SummerPalace without visiting the Long Corridor and the Marble Boat. Now, here we go,the Long Corridor first!
(Strolling along the Long Corridor)
The Long Corridor starts from the Gate Inviting the Moon to the ShizhangGate. It is 728 meters long and consists of 273 sections. The Long corridor isone of the major structures of the Summer Palace. Since the corridor wasdesigned to follow the physical features of the southern slope of LongevityHill, four multiple-eaved, octagonal pavilions ( Retaining the GoodnessPavilion, Living with the Ripples Pavilion, Autumn Water Pavilion, Clear and FarPavilion) were placed at bends and undulation, they represent four seaons of ayear. Thus visitors will hardly notice the rise and fall of the terrain. As amajor part of the architectural style of the Summer Palace, the Long Corridorserves as an ingenious connector between the Lake and the Hill. Scatteredbuildings on the southern slope were linked to create a unified complex.
The Long Corridor is the longest covered veranda in any Chinese garden. Onthe purlins and beams of the covered veranda, there are over 14,000 Suzhou stylepaintings. Among them, there are 546 color paintings relating to the scenes ofWest Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Beside the colorful paintings ofnatural scenery, there are also scenes of flowers, birds, fish, insects, mythology and figures. The paintings of figures are mainly adapted from ancientChinese classical literature, such as ‘Pilgrimage to the West’, ‘The Romance ofthe Three Kingdoms’, ‘The western Chamber’, “Water Margin’, and ‘The Dream ofthe Red Mansion’.
(In front of the Gate of Dispelling Clouds)
Now we are approaching the central part of the structures on the lakesideslope, the Tower of Buddhist Incense within the Hall of Dispelling Clouds. Thecentral axis line starts from the wharf next to the lake to the Sea of Wisdom ontop of the Hill. The main architectural structures here are the Gate ofDispelling Clouds, Hall of Dispelling clouds, Tower of Buddhist Incense and theSea of Wisdom, which altogether form a splendid three-dimensional landscape. Thelayout of this group of architectures was based on scenes described in Buddhistsutras. This group of structures are among the most magnificently constructedhere in the Summer Palace. This is a good place to taking photos, we will stayhere for about 15 minutes.
Now we are walking continuely along the Long Corridor, the next scene weare going to visit is Marble Boat.
Look over there! Halfway up the slope there stands the Hall of Listening toOrioles. It was the place for emperor and empress to enjoy opera and courtmusic. It is said the singing of orioles is very pleasing. Before the Garden ofVirtuous Harmony was built, Empress Dowager Cixi enjoyed opera and music here. Now the hall is one of the most famous restaurants in China, featuring imperialdishes and desserts.
This is the famous Marble Boat. A famous scientist of China’s Eastern HanDynasty once said, “Water can float the boat, but it can also tip it over.” Aprime minister of Tang Dynasty Wei Zheng once used these words to persuade LiShimin, the emperor of the Tang Dynasty. He said people are water and theemperor is the boat. People can support a good emperor. However, they also canoverthrow the dynasty. Emperor Qianlong built this huge boat in the Garden inorder to make the allusion concrete. On one hand, Emperor Qianlong encouragedhimself to run the country well. On the other hand, he wanted to show that hisrule of the Qing Dynasty was as firm as the Marble Boat and there was no fear ofoverturning the boat. The Marble Boat was the place for Emperor Qianlong tosample tea and enjoy the scenery of Kunming Lake. Emperor Qianlong once camehere to engage in the freeing of captive animals. In the times of Qianlong, theMarble Boat was a Chinese styled stone boat with a Chinese style woodensuperstructure on the top of it. When it was rebuilt in the times of Guangxu, aforeign and Chinese elements mixed resulting in two wheels to be added to theboat, one on each side. The floor was paved with colored bricks. All of thewindows were inlaid with multiple-colored glass. A big mirror was installed onthe superstructure for viewing rain.
Our tour is drawing to a close after we visited the Marble Boat. Today weonly visited the major scenic spots of the Summer Palace. I have left otherspots of interest for your next visit. I will now show you out through the RuyiGate. Our coach is waiting for us outside the gate. I do hope you enjoyedtoday’s tour. Thank you.

ladies and gentlemen:
welcome to the temple of heaven. (after self-introduction) preserved cultural heritages of china. there are basically two kinds of visitors who come here: local pensioners who do exercises here in the morning and evening and sightseers both from home and abroad. all in all ,there are 12 million visitors very year. now we are going to go along the route that leads to the alter. it will take roughly one hour. mind you ,the emperor also walked along this route to pay tribute to the god of heaven.
the largest group of architectures ever to be dedicated to heaven ,the temple of heaven served as an exclusive altar for chinese monarchs during the ming and qing dynasties. it was decreed that rulers of successive dynasties would place altars in their own capitals to worship heaven and pray for good harvest. but why ?
the ancient chinese believed that heaven was the supreme ruler of the universe and the fate of mankind, and thus worshiping rites dedicated to heaven came into being.
the heaven the ancient chinese referred to was actually the universe, or nature. in those days, there were specfic rites of worship. this was especially true during the ming and qing dynasties when elaborate ceremonies were held.
the temple of heaven was built in 1420 during the reign of emperor youngle of the ming dynasty. situated in the southern part of the city ,this grand set of structures covers an area of 273 hectares. to better symbolize heaven and earth ,the northern part of the temple is circular while the southern part is square .the whole compound is enclosed by two walls, a square wall outside a round one. the outer area is characterized by suburban scenery, while the inner part is used for sacrifices. the inner enclosure consists of the hall of prayer for good harvest and the circular mound altar.
the circular mound altar is enclosed by two walls ,each containing four groups of southern lattice star gate, each in turn consisting of three doors, with 24 marble doors altogether. standing on the passage facing north, you will notice that with each pair of doors on is narrower than the other. this reflects the feudal hierarchy: the wider door was reserved for monarchs, while the narrower one was used by courtiers.
on the day of the ceremony ,the emperor would don his ritual costume and be ushered in by the official in charge of religious affairs. he ascended the three terraces in the forefront to pay tribute at the alter.
we are now on the top terrace of the altar, or the third terrace .each terrace has a flight of 9 steps. at the center of this terrace lies a round stone surrounded by 9 steps. at the center of this terrace lies a round stone surrounded by 9 concentric rings of stone. the number of stones in the first ring is 9, in the second ,18, up to 81 in the 9th ring. even the number of carved balustrades on these terraces is a multiplee of 9. but why?
according to ancient chinese philosophy, yin and yang were two opposing factors. heaven and the odd numbers belonged to yang while the earth and even numbers belonged to yin. nine was the largest heavenly number accessible to man . what is more, the ancient people also believed that heaven consisted of nine layers and that the emperor` s abode was on the uppermost tier.
once more look at the round stone in the center. the upper terrace is nine zhang (a chinese unit of length, one zhang equals 3.3 meters ) in circumference ,while the middle is 15 zhang, the lower,21 zhang. classified as yang numbers, the sum of these numerals is 45 zhang which was meant to symbolized success. what is more, by applying the concept of odd numbers and strengthening nine and its multiples, the concept of heaven was thus illustrated and realized . the concept of nine will also be mentioned when we visit some other buildings.
now i will give you a brief account of what happened here annually on the inter solstice. the memorial tablet dedicated to heaven would be set up on the north side of the terrace, while tablets dedicated to the emperor `s ancestors would be enshrined on the flanks. the service would begin around 4 o` clock in the morning. all of the lanterns would be lit .in the foreground, a sacrificial calf is being barbecued. on the square in front of the altar, the emperor, under heavy escort of nearly a thousand courtiers, princes of royal blood ,musicians, dancers and uniformed soldiers, would slowly ascend the altar to offer sacrifice and pray in honor of heaven. when the service drew to a close ,the sacrifice offered in front of the memorial tablets would be incinerated .all of participants would watch the thick smoke rise upward as if they were seeing god off .music and dancing would follow .in the end ,the emperor would return to the forbidden city secure in the belief that he would be blessed and protected by heaven until the next winter solstice.
it is interesting to note that ,the stone in the very middle of the altar was of major importance ,since it was where the emperor used to stand to say his prayer. the stone ,which is known as the god`s heart stone, is peculiar in that it is characterized by a specific acoustic phenomenon: it made the emperor` s voice clearer and louder, thus adding to the mystic atmosphere of the service .you can try this out by yourself. (proceed northward to pass through the lattice stargate)
this structure is known as heaven` s storehouse. it is entered through the gate of glazed tiles. the roofing, beams, and brackets are all made of glazed tiles or bricks. this is the only structure of its kind in china today .
the heaven` s storehouse was where memorial tablets dedicated to the gods were kept. douglas hurd, a former british foreigh secretary ,once said , “god attends to his affairs on the cir4cular mound altar but stays here. ” now let` s go in to to see it (go through the left side door)
(in the courtyard of heaven` s storehouse)this is the imperial vault of heaven, the main structure of heaven` s storehouse. it was built in 1530 and is 17 meters in height and 19 meters in diameter. the structure feature blue roofs topped by a gilded ball ,and carved wooden doors and windows. it is decorated with colored paintings. founded on a 3-meter-hign round marble terrace ,the building also features a gigantic carved marble ramp laid in the stone staircase leading up to the front entrance.. the ramp is carved in “two dragons playing with a pearl ” design in relief. we will enter the main hall by going up the stone staircase on the eastern side.
the arch of the hall is buttressed by 16 giant pillars on two rings. on top of the pillars there are gilt brackets supporting a circular caisson ,or covered ceiling .the ceiling is characterized by a golden coiling dragon design. the 8 pillar of the inner ring are painted scarlet and decorated with golden lotuses.
to the north of the hall there is a marble pedestal. atop it ,up a wooden flight of 9 steps, is where the major tablet dedicate to heaven was enshrined. on each flank four tablets are enshrined in honor of the ancestors of the qing emperors. in the annex hall in hornor of the ancestors of the qing emperors. in the annex halls in the courtyard, there are tablets dedicated to the deities of the sun, moon ,constellation, cloud ,rain, wind and thunder.
aside from exquisitely laid out architectures, heaven` s storehouse is also famous for two structures with peculiar acoustic features, i. e. the echo wall and the triple- sound stone. a mere whisper at any point close to the wall can be heard clearly on the other side, although the parties may be 40 or 50 meters apart. this is possible because the wall is round and hermetically constructed with smooth ,solid bricks.
in front of the steps leading away from the halls is the triple sound stone. if you stand on the first stone and call out or clap your hands, the sound will echo once; on the second stone, the sound will be heard twice; and on the third stone, the sound will repeat three times. hence the name. (go out through the right door and stroll along the circular path nor thward)
the temple of heaven is also famous for its cypress trees-there are more than 60,000 cypress trees in all, among which over 4,000 are more than one hundred years old ,adding to the solemn atmosphere of the temple .this tall cypress was planted more than 500 years ago. its thick branches and twisting trunk resembling nine coiling playful dragons; thus it is known as the nine-dragon cypress. it is said that this tree was here to welcome the monarchs. now it is here to welcome visitor from all over the world.
Now we are back again on the central axis. this brick-arched gate is known as chengzhen (adopting fidelity) .this gate is the northern gate of the circular mound altar and the hall of prayer for good harvest. the hall of prayer for good harvest is situated at the extreme end of the axis. it was used by the emperor in the first month of every lunar year for services dedicated to good harvest.
entering the hall of prayer for good harvest, we set foot on a raised passage 360 meters long, which the emperor also took to proceed to the hall. this broad north-south walkway, called danbiqiao (red stairway bridge), connects the two sets of main building in the temple of heaven and constitutes a single axis.
the passage is divided into left, control and right paths by the cross arrangement of slabs. the central and the widest path is known as heavenly thoroughfare , which was reserved exclusively for god; nobody, including the emperor, was allowed to set foot onto it . the emperor used the path on the east, which is known as the imperial walk. the ministers and princes used the one on the west .interesting enough ,there is no walkway left for ordinary people. this is because the temple of heaven used to be off-limits to them.
contrary to appearances, this walkway is not a bridge at all . but how so ? this road is 4 meters above the ground and there is a cavern underneath that was reserved for sacrificial oxen and sheep. the cattle were slaughtered at a slaughterhouse about 500 meters away and brought here for sacrifice. all in all ,it can be said this walkway did serve as bridge and can be looked upon as the first cloverleaf in beijing.
looking back at the thoroughfare, you may realize that this walk is gaining height toward its northern end. as people approach the architectural group of the hall of prayer for good harvest, the flanking groves of cypress recede and perspective widens. here you are in heaven.
the marble terrace up ahead is called jufutai, or costumechanging terrace. it is located to the east of the red stairway bridge and covers a space of 25 square meters .it has marble slab balustrades. the day before the service ,officials in charge would put up a yellow satin tent on the terrace for the emperor to change out of his yellow dragon robe into blue ceremonial clothes. after the service, the emperor would return to the tentand change back into his imperial robe before returning to the palace. (proceed to the south gate of the hall of prayer for good harvest)
this structure is called the gate of pray for good harvest. we can catch a slight glimpse of the central building ,the hall of prayer for good harvest, though the colonnade of the gate. a gigantic and lofty group of buildings, the complex includes the gate of prayer for good harvest, the hall of prayer for good harvest, eastern and western annex halls ,the huanqian (imperial heaven) long corridor, heaven kitchen, slaughterhouse, etc.
the annex halls were symmetrically built on a 1.5-meter-hignbrick-and-marble terrace ,to set off the loftiness and magnificence of the main hall .this unique building ,38 meters in height, is characterized by a cone-shaped structure with triple eaves and a top that is crowned by a gilt ball. the roofing is made of blue glazed tiles, the color of the sky .underneath the roof, the beams and bracket are decorated with colored paintings. the base of the structure is a triple-tiered, circular marble terrace. at a distance, the terrace looks like a gigantic, spiraling cloud with the structure perched on top of it .
today the hall of prayer for good harvest is the hallmark of beijing, which enjoys a prolonged history of civilization.
the base of the hall is a triple-tiered, circular marble terrace, which is 90 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height ,covering a space of 4,000 square meters. meticulous accuracy was given to the layout of the structure. in the middle of each three-tiered flight of stairs, there is a giant marble ramp carved in cloud, dragon and phoenix designs. to set off the ramps, the top of the balustrades and downpipes are designed with corresponding floral scrolls. in southern part of each tier, a gigantic bronze incense burner is placed. sandalwood was burnt in them when rites were observed.
(in front of the hall of prayer for good harvest) climbing up this marble terrace, we see the main hall,a masterpiece of ancient china. looking up you will see the caisson, or covered ceiling, characterized by complex designs of dragons and phoenixes. in and out , the hall is decorated with colored drawing of dragons and phoenixes.
without the use of steel ,cement and nail, and even without the use of big beams and crossbeams, the entire structure is supported by 28 massive wooden pillars and number of bars, laths, joints and rafters. the four central pillars, called the dragon-well pillars, are 19.2 meters high and painted with designs of composite followers, representing the four season. there are two rings of 12 scarlet pillars each. the inner ring represents the 12 months and the outer rings the 12 divisions of the day and night .between the two rings there are 24 partitioned spaces to mark the solar terms of the chinese lunar year. the pillars, 28 in number, also represent the 28 constellations in the universe- the ancient chinese believed that there were 28 constellations that made up the sky.
the center of the stone-paved floor is a round marble slab, which is 88.5 centimeters in diameter. interestingly, the slab features natural black and white veins, corresponding to the dragon-phoenix design on the ceiling. this particular slab is known as the dragon-phoenix stone and is regarded as a treasure inseparable from the hall.
the furnishings within the hall are placed in their original positions dating back to when emperor xianfeng ruled .in the forefront and above the throne are enshrined tablets in commemoration of heaven. on either table on each side tablets of the emperor` s ancestors were placed. each tablet is fronted by an altar. a total of 24 kinds of offering were made on it ,including soup, wine, assorted cereals, and a calf.
the sacrificial rites were observed in the wee hours of the morning, sometime in the first month of the chinese lunar year. because it was still dark, candles, lanterns and torches were lit. this lighting coupled with the incense being burnt inside the hall ,helped make the ceremony both grand and mystical.
by the time the service began,207 musicians and dancers would be performing on platforms outside the hall. the emperor, in his blue sacrificial robe and with an air of piety and sincerity, would walk slowly into the hall, kowtow, and offer wine and prayer in hornor of the deities and his ancestors. all of the offerings would then be taken to incinerators on the eastern side of the gate of prayer for good harvest. with this we conclude our visit to the temper of heaven. the feudal monarchs and their sacrificial rites have long vanished in history .however, this group of magnificent and lofty structures remain as a fine testament of the ancient chinese` s ingenuity and as one of the cultural heritages of mankind.
from the eastern gate of the hall of prayer for good harvest, we have now enter a 300-meter-long corridor. consisting of 72 sections, this corridor served as a connecting building between the slaughterhouse. heaven kitchen, and the main hall ,it is said that this once served as a sacrificial food production line. flanking the corridor are shopping stalls. you may find some souvenirs for your family and friend there.
well ,that is all for this tour. thank you for your attention. i look forward to your next visit. good luck and bon voyage.

Beidaihe - A Must for Birds Watchers
Set on the coast some 280 km east of Beijing, the seaside holiday resort of Beidaihe is famous not only as a tourist center and as a good place to recuperate after illness, but also as one of the best places in the world to see migratory birds.
China''s Yanshan Mountain Range winds its way thousands of miles from the west to the eastern seaboard. It sends a number of waterways like the Henghe, Daihe, Yanghe and Luanhe rivers down to the Bohai Sea at Beidaihe. They create a vast area of wetlands, mud-banks, and lagoons with rich feeding and good places for birds to rest. Here migratory routes come together like great seasonal rivers of birds linking northeast Asia with south China, Indo-China, Australia and even far off east Africa.
Nature has richly endowed Beidaihe with bird species and of the 1,198 found in China, 416 have been recorded at Beidaihe. This is a part of the world that plays host to eighteen species of gulls, three of swans, and six of cranes.
Xu Weishu, vice director of the China Ornithological Society tells of the time when as many as 2,729 oriental white storks were recorded in Beidaihe, doubling the previous world record.
Look into the skies of Beidaihe in the first ten days of November every year and you will be sure to see flocks of red-crowned cranes and white cranes.
The year from May 1999 to May 20xx saw ten new bird species added to the list for Beidaihe.
Back in the 1940s Danish scientist, Axel Hemmingsen, published a report saying that he had seen large numbers of cranes at Beidaihe, but no one followed up on this at the time. Then in 1985 guided by Hemmingsen''s report, British ornithologist Doctor Martin Williams first came to Beidaihe. With the help of an official from the Beidaihe tourism authority, Dr Williams visited Shijiutuo Island in nearby Laoting County. What he discovered there was far beyond his expectations and he found many new kinds of birds. Since then, accompanied by his Chinese counterpart, Xu Weishu, he has brought many overseas professionals together in Beidaihe every year to enjoy watching the birds and carry out research.
Since the first two parties of Chinese bird enthusiasts visited Beidaihe in 1999, more and more domestic visitors have joined bird watching groups going there on vacation.
Beidaihe has enjoyed a good reputation since 1893. It was then that a British engineer helping build a railway line recognized that with its low hills, beaches and sea breezes, the headland was an ideal place to go to escape the summer heat of the interior. On his recommendation, the first holidaymakers arrived. Beidaihe, until then a poor fishing village, quickly became popular with diplomats, merchants, missionaries, and well off Chinese.
Meanwhile the birds are regular visitors here too. Flocks of gulls are easily spotted. What might not be so easy is to be able to distinguish among the bewildering variety in the skies over Beidaihe. Many different birds pass through here as the seasons come and go and every year still sees fresh species spotted. It is a magnificent sight to see the occasional flock of large cranes pass by or to watch the birds of prey, however the larger birds have been decreasing in number.
Round the calendar
The period spanning the last ten days of April through the last ten days of May is the best season for bird watching. This is when you can see the greatest number and variety of birds in Beidaihe.
Then the period from the last ten days of August through September is the time for the medium and small wading birds to pass through.
October brings another peak season as many birds pass through the area, going south for the winter.
As the colder weather comes in with the first ten days of November, flocks of cranes will be making their way south. They will come north again the following March.
The best spots
For waterfowl and songbirds, try Chitu Hill, Lianfeng Hill and the hilltops in Geziwo Park or the many well-wooded courtyards in Beidaihe District.
· For swimming and wading birds, Daihe, Yanghe and Dapu rivers should not disappoint.
· Visit Jiaoshan Mountain to enjoy watching birds of prey and songbirds.
· Shijiutuo Island in nearby Laoting County is well worth an extended visit of a few days duration.
During the course of a typical 12-day visit, you might expect to see 200 different kinds of birds. Beidaihe China International Travel Service arranges specialist tours for bird enthusiasts. Their office number is 086-335-4033598.
